Dear Vanity Fair,
I see that according to your website, your editor, Graydon Carter, “wanted to do something different for the portfolio’s 19th year.” I guess this includes making it a collage and adding an elephant—but you seem to have kept your tradition of putting white actors on the front cover (left spread) while tucking away the actors of color on the pull out. (This practice is occasionally varied through putting a single actor of color on the front cover, but it’s been a while since that has happened, too.)
Might we propose doing something really different, such as, say, creating a 2014 Hollywood spread with only actors of color on the front/left spread and tucking the white actors under the cover flap? (I’m sure they’d be able to manage really working that inside spread since the actors of color have been doing the same for years.) Too much too soon? How about doing a front left cover of mostly actors of color with one white actor? Yeah? Wonderful. See you next year.
(I mean, the inclusion of the elephant—is it an Asian elephant? If so, yay for Asian American representation!— in the cover spread was a pleasant surprise but…like…yeah.)
